...oh. They really did leave me in the woods.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

[Souji's back from his mallynap as a kid; a kid totally opposite of what he's usually like. He vaguely remembers Luceti and is wandering around in the woods on the edge of town, confused and dragging his journal around.]

Wow. Um. Don't take it personal, Saizou. I'm sure he doesn't mean that.

[Saizou is huffing and grunting up a storm, looking at Sokka as if Sokka might understand his rage. LOOK AT WHAT HE'S PUT UP WITH FOR TWO DAYS NOW. Make it better, Sokka!

Souji just stares and goes to pick up the now empty laundry basket.]

I suggested they eat him, but Ayumu-san said we can't.

[... maybe this isn't Souji at all. That's just criminal.]

... I suggested you do that and you didn't like the idea at all.

....This is the first time we've met.

[Or so he thinks. He can't be sure. Normally he doesn't like talking to new people and yet this guy seems familiar. After a moment of struggle, he gets the basket up into his arms, then turns to look at Sokka.]

She says that pig belongs to one of her housemates, but he's missing. She won't tell me his name.

[Oh jeez. So. His housemates were trying to keep his future identity on the downlow. And here Sokka is spoiling that.

Change of tactics. He won't tell Souji anything more than he has. ]

Why don't you practice swordplay?

[He's guessed as much though; since the pig keeps following him around looking upset. The missing housemate, his sudden appearance, the way everyone seems on edge around him, everything is telling him what he doesn't want to know, so it isn't that big of a spoiler.

When he moves to leave, said pig grunts - unhappy at being left behind, causing Souji to pause.]

I'm forbidden. I have my reasons.

[He holds the basket out to the pig.]

Why do you practice swordplay?

[Forbidden? Well. Maybe it's just because he's a kid. Makes sense, right?]

Because I have people I want to protect.

[To most people, maybe. The pig stares at the basket and then looks up at Sokka, grunting at him instead. Souji makes a face.]

It must be nice. They should be grateful.

[Going over, he sets the basket down and hefts the pig up, waddling over to set him inside.]

Yeah, I'm sure they are.

[Huh. This is really weird. Maybe Souji just needs to be shown how awesome swords really are.]

You know. There's no one here to tell you what you can and can't do. If you want, I could teach a few moves. Let you find out what you're missing out on.

[He comes to a stop, just short of the basket and Saizou flails, dropping to the ground.]

[Well. He's not sure what else to say. He's starting to feel a tad unwelcome.]

Well. Do you uh. Need any help with anything? [It's still Souji. Even if he's shorter.]

[Sorry, Sokka. Souji is a brat and this is why he tries to be so friendly when he grows up. orz]

...You can tell me why people keep looking at me strangely. Am I that different from before?

... you're a lot happier. And enthusiastic. And you kind of like to bug people. But not in a terrible way. And, you know, an adult. Kind of.

[Maybe Souji just lost all his maturity at adulthood.]

[Yeah, that's pretty much what happened. Souji looks at the basket and frowns.]

...And people put up with that?

I guess so. I don't really have a choice in the matter.

.... [Ah, yeah he guesses that's true. He picks Saizou up again and puts him in the basket, staring at the pig as it stares back up at him. An adult. A happier one.]

...I wonder why I change.

Something really, really good must happen to you when you get older.

[Clearly this is the only explanation.]

.... [He so cannot imagine that ever happening, but if Sokka says so, then maybe it's true.]

....Is that how people change? Having good things happen to them?

Well, it works the other way around too, with bad things. But I think that would just make you into some kind of evil guy. [Brooding kid + tragic backstory = supervillain]

...I don't want to be evil.

[Captain Obvious. He stares at the basket at the pig glaring at him.]

...What sort of evil villain has a grumpy pig for a pet. That would be depressing.

The kind that makes his students wake up at ridiculously early hours in the morning.

[Who knows, maybe he can instill in younger Souji the ideals of waking up at reasonable hours.]

Waking up early is good for you. You can finish everything before the others wake up.

[Nope, Sokka. Even tiny Souji wakes up early.]

Maybe. But you can't do cool night time things after everyone else is asleep. So you lose out there.

...You can just do them before everyone wakes up.

[He does not understand this logic, Sokka. Train him in the ways of being a rambunctious kid.]

[Kids. Kids don't understand these things. So he sighs and shakes his head, somewhat amused.]

Anyway, I guess I should let you do... whatever you're doing. If you change your mind about the sword thing, let me know.
