[At Katara's instruction, Sokka reluctantly heads outside with Toph. Once outside, he leans against the building, sinking just a bit as he thinks about what's going on inside. He might seem like he's angry at Toph, but he's not. At least not entirely. It's mostly himself and Souji.]

[She considers just...leaving. Going off to be by herself for awhile in the woods. But that also feels cowardly, no matter how much she doesn't want to be here. No matter how much she does not want to talk about this.

So she'll just wait to see if Sokka says anything, standing a few feet off with a growing desire to punch something.]

[He doesn't want to. But after an awkward enough silence, he finally speaks up.]

It's not your fault. [Sure, a little less mocking and gloating would have gone a long way. But she's a kid.]

[She gives the earth a good, hard kick.]

...Why didn't tell me he was a sick guy?!

[He's had a long time to wrap his around this. And right now, his only answer isn't as nice as it could be.]

Because he's stubborn and proud. [And stupid.] He doesn't want people treating him differently because of it. [And Sokka never has had to. But now...]

Yeah, and now he's really hurt because I fought him and I didn't know. Something...really bad might happen because of me.

[She can't bring herself to say what. Was it even death with the way people could be resurrected around here?]

Katara's good at this stuff. I think he'll be fine... for now, anyway.

[He already knows Souji is going to die. And it's weird balancing that knowledge with the fact it's not permanent. It makes it less real in a way.]

...For now. You mean, he's gonna die anyway.

[So she's only made it so it's going to happen sooner. Great. Just great.]

... maybe. [Probably. Okita Souji seems to be intent on it. But maybe Katara will do something the other healers haven't. But sometimes he thinks Okita Souji wouldn't accept a cure even if it was offered to him.]

[Hands ball into tiny, shaking fists at her sides.]

Can't the...I don't know! Malnosso fix him, or something? Aren't they doctors? It's stupid just to let him die!

[He's trying not to get worked up about this too. Souji is more than just his teacher now. He's a friend and someone Sokka cares about.]

I don't know, Toph. I don't.

[Toph, on the other hand, is entirely getting worked up. Someone should have told her--she'd made things worse--why would they just let him die? The frustration just keeps building in her mind.]

Well--it's stupid! It's all just...stupid!

[And she kicks a little tremor into the ground.]

[No arguments here. Or response either. He wishes there was a way to fix all this, but he's come to a sort of acceptance of it by now. At least up until now he hadn't really had to think about it as often.]

I think I need to go...punch some boulders for a bit, or something.

[She's curious to see if he'll stop her--she knows she should stay, but this...just wasn't her thing. And she doesn't know what to do with herself. Throwing herself into earthbending seems like the best option right now.]

[He won't. She should stay, but he's not about to go telling her what she should and shouldn't do.]

I'll let you know what happens.

...Thanks. I guess.

[And she goes sulking off into the trees. This wasn't going to be pretty.]
